I captured this excited pileated woodpecker on the edge of some deep woods, on a hot dusk in august 2010. It was about 7:30 on a calm night at the edge of the shawnee national forest. The tempurature was 85 degrees. What i find really enjoyable though is the rising, and ebbing and flowing of, i believe the typical summer cicadas. A recording made on the bank of a small stream. The prominent bird that you will hear -- especially at 30 seconds into the recording -- is a beautiful little bird called the louisiana waterthrush. I made this recording by attaching my zoom h4n to a sturdy tripod, and using the built-in internal stereo microphones on the zoom. The built-in microphones have a 90-degree and 180-degree setting. For this recording, i set the angle on 180 degrees.

Recorded on an early march morning at a ranch in the rocky mountains of colorado with a zoom h2 using the internal mics. A group of about twenty sled dogs greet a visitor enthusiastically. The higher barks and yips are the siberian huskies and the lower howls and moans are the alaskan malamutes. The dogs were excited and getting ready for a sled ride, their favorite activity (after eating).

Location: charlotte douglas international airporttime: april 2015. A strong storm hit charlotte, north carolina, and flights got delayed or canceled. The gates got crowded and people were restless. Lots of airline announcements, people talking on their cell phones, airport electric cart beeps, voices in english and a few words here and there in spanish, etc. Don't remember if this was recorded using the zoom h1 or h5 with the xyh-5 x/y microphone capsule.

After spending a weekend putting together a giant wardrobe (from everyones favourite swedish furniture store) for my girlfriend i thought i should reward myself by making some recordings of it. One of my favorite bird-songs is this "zipper" sounding call of the northern parula. Perhaps you have heard this very unique call while out in the woods. The sound is of an lg french-door refrigerator that just had the compressor replaced but had too much freon loaded. The tubing dedicated to the freezer section accumulated frost which internal fan blades were rubbing against. Later, a savvy technician released some measure of freon and the sound went away. A wonderful typical mid-summer soundscape of cicadas, and some katydids recorded on the edge of a small town in illinois. Towards the end of the recording you will hear a very cool doppler-effect as the truck passes from right to left. Recorded about 8:00 at night with my zoom h4-n recorder using it's internal microphones. I had the volume level set fairly high -- 80 -- so you will probably also hear the constant hum of the various central air conditioning units. .

I left the recorder locked and unattended in the car whilst we went and did a bit of shopping.
