You can hear me taking the box, opening it, pulling out the blister, poping out the pills, putting the blister back into the box, closing the box, throwing it away, taking the pills into my mouth, taking a glass of water, dringing water, swallowing pills, putting the glass on the table, and breathing out. These are not squeaks of pain! no rats were harmed! if you own rats, you know that they are very greedy when it comes to food, and will actually yell at you if you try to take it. Here are my two rats, rem and ezio, eating some bread, and me chasing them around with my hand to get them to squeak. They were not happy with me. So these squeaks basically mean, "no! my food! get away!" it's kinda cute. Sorry it's horrible quality, little rat voices are very soft. The squeaks that sound like painful squeaks are rem, and the more whiny ones are ezio. It's funny how they have distinct voices just like humans. Eeeeeeeeyup. Annoyed rats.

A summer morning field recording at newport lakes reserve, a former bluestone quarry and rubbish tip in the western melbourne suburb of newport. The area is now a vast suburban park with a native nursery and twin human-made lakes, popular with many species of birds and people. This recording was made using a sony pcm-m10 recorder's built-in omnidirectional stereo microphones. It was taken on january 15 2011 at 8. 30am, on unceded boon wurrung land, part of the eastern kulin nations. I acknowledge the sovereignty of the traditional owners and pay my respects to their elders and all first nations people.

When i first tested out my zoom h5 i began talking into the mic and then all of a sudden i needed a sneeze. I was about to stop the recording but then thought it would be good to record the sneeze to see how it handled my loudness. Well it coped very well and the recording came out perfect!i then played around with it in audacity and slowed it down -86% which makes me sound like a roaring lion. I recorded this at late night in a rural german area at summer, approximately 150 - 200 meters away from the party (the party took place on a big and open field). The wind was blowing away from the people towards me, which is the reason, why you can hear the people well, even though there were trees between the people and the recording micorphone. Mabe you can hear a few cars very far in the distance along with the near taxis, picking the people up to take them home, too.

Got a group of about 8 people to say "hey!" a few times. Layered all the takes, compressed, and added a touch of reverb. I've used this one a bunch in my own songs. Sometimes, to achieve a convincing gang vocal effect, when i don't have a gang, you can sing your line a few times, and then layer this "hey" under each syllable, and you can get a pseudo-gang vocal. Yes, it required quite a lot of work to record so much talking in quality! it's almost an entire audiobook squeezed into 5 minutes. Strangely (or not) listening to this makes my mind rest, because the noise blocks all other sounds from the environment - making my mind free of stimulation, allowing for sleep-like rest state. The signal is so much modulated that it appears to be not modulated at all - like static you get from a fm radio of you tune it wrong. The brain receives less data when you listen to this, than when you sit in a room hearing even faint (but distinct) noises from outside, other rooms, other people or yourself. This is sound masking in action. A very interesting psychoacoustic property of human hearing. Also: this is an interesting material to study of my voice's spectral energy distribution while speaking (as opposed to singing). We went to strasbourg to follow an invitation by an photographer to his vernissage! to bad that we got stucked into the traffic jam and arrived while the gallery was already closed! that was really a bummer because the drive took us four hours!lucky that i had my zoom h6 because strasbourg is by far an amazing city with so many street life. It is insane how many little streets with these tiny cafes and all the people around! it is like a magnet and you got sucked in. The french people know how to live life and i recorded in 3 parts of the city to give you a nice ambience feeling. This is part 1.

Bowling alley- the thing with recording a bowling alley is that the pins are so far away. When you’re the one bowling, you’re not really listening to all the chatter around you; in fact your brain does its best to cancel it out (it’s called selective listening, google it), and so you really hear the clamoring of the pins as they crash and fall. Microphones don’t have any such ability; they just take in whatever sound waves reach them, and they don’t care either way about the relative loudness of those sound waves. So what happens in a recording like this is that even though it sounds like any ordinary (busy) bowling alley, the pins sound really far away in relation to the human chatter. The presents of the colourful red and yellow dry leaves that is still on the trees, creates the noise of the wind with rustling whispers. Is a constantly form of natural white noise that is always changing and evolving. These recordings is from my third attempt. I think it is very difficult to record the “spirit” and unique sound of the wind. This is pure natural wind sounds (no layering, no post-processing, no synthesizers). Early spring thunderstorm in north central oklahoma recorded on 05/02/2018 starting at about 9:30 pm cdt. Recorded in the middle of the country by placing a mic outside the man cave window of my house. The storm starts with light rain and some medium distance thunder. At about 4:00 mins the wind starts to pick up and by 5 mins the wind sound drowns out everything else (50-60 mph gusts). By 6:00 mins the wind is fading as the storm front passes. By 9:00 mins it’s just soft rain and occasional thunder. At about 13:00 mins, the thunder starts picking up a bit. At about 17:00 mins it starts raining harder again, with occasional thunder, until the end. A couple of human noises were edited out, and noise reduction was applied.

Recording mostly consists of birds and general life from people moving/talking as they arrive to their cabins with family. Its intended to represent a peaceful vibe with some human presence. I decided to not remove much movement/actions from the people such post because i felt it might suck out the soul of the recording. In post: in pro tools i removed some low rumble, and and trimmed the highs just a little bit. Added a "pro expander" to lower some noise, both generated by the h5 and the location. Ps. Well, i was walking aloong in the riparian forest in leipzig, where you have to cross a small bridge. There is often a guy feeding te ducks. I was there with my mic in the backpack and asked him if he could continue to feed the ducks while i could place the mic in the middle of the feeding spot. At first the ducks were scared because of this strange microphon standing there. So i put some autumn leafs on it to camouflage it. So, this worked and the ducks started to walk around the mic and eat the bread. What you can hear ist the giggling of the mallards and the sonourus sound of the mandarin ducks. Also you have quite the rush of a near located highway in the back :-/ i had to cut a little bit, because the "duck man" was talking along and some passers-by, but i wanted to keep it clean from human voices. Thats also wy the duck take of in the middle is cutted off. But in the end you will have a clear complete take off again :-). Greetings and all the best.

Then it was imported to audacity where few modifications were made. First of all, the record was precisely cut so there are no human voices in the background. Then, the sound was normalized and slightly compressed before applying the noise reduction effect. Last, but not least a constant gain was added at the beginning and lightly fading effect took his place at the end. The ease at which members of our society buy and dispose of our goods is quite disgusting, much more than the experience of rescuing useful things from the trash. The idea of making things to be thrown makes no sense unless money is the highest form of good. Companies make things to be disposable so they can sell more, with no thought of what will happen when we have used up too much, or the environment becomes so polluted that it can no longer support human life. Dumpster diving has many negative connotations, but recently it appears to have been embraced by freegans and those who are environmentally minded. The act saves things from thousands of years of preservation in a landfill, while decreasing production. I often try to forage for useful items and food in the wild, while dumpster diving is more like urban foraging; an experience that reveals the culture of the city, rather than the culture of the nature. The sad fact is that what i leave in the wild is used and recycled naturally, while what i leave in a dumpster is sealed in a time capsule that will outlast present successes and show future generations how we have failed, should future generations come.

We develop iphone app that perform musical analysis on recorded audio from the iphone. Our app implementation make use of the audio queue service to receive raw audio buffers from the audio queue callback. In the first version of our app we had the problem of too much clipping on the recording which degrade the accuracy of our analysis. We also suspected that the noise canceling algorithm in iphone 5 produce distorted sound, which is not much noticeable by human ear but distorted enough to affect our sensitive algorithm. We found that the solution to our problem is to set the audio session mode to kaudiosessionmode_measurement. This session mode is supposed to give maximum freedom for us to control the microphone input, which include turning off the automatic gain control and probably noise canceling as well. The solution works very well except that it introduce a strange waveform pattern in the beginning of all recordings in iphone 5. It is very hard to explain the waveform we get, so i made two recordings at freesound so that you can see it visually. The first recording is made in an almost quite environment, and you can see the weird spike in the beginning of the recording. The second recording (this recording) is made with constant background noise, and you can see that the actual sound wave is offset from the strange curve and gradually increase to its original volume. This waveform only happens on iphone 5 devices that we tested, and there is no problem at all for iphone 4s and older generations. We have tried various settings and the glitch is still unavoidable as long as we set the audio session mode to kaudiosessionmode_measurement. We also find similar glitch in one of our iphone 5 devices, in which the glitch happens even if we try to set just the input gain level without changing the session mode. We are not sure if this is a hardware-related bug in iphone 5, or if it is fixable software glitch in the future version of ios. For the moment we are looking for workaround that can avoid this glitch while automatic gain control and noise canceling are disabled.
